Over 1,300 years ago,

the Tibetan word 'thangka' referred to a painting that

could be spread out or rolled up.

At that time,

most people led a nomadic lifestyle,

and temple murals could not be taken along. Therefore,

people needed a type of Buddha image that

could be rolled up and carried with them,

so wherever they went,

they could unfold it and pay their respects.

This is how thangkas gradually came into existence.
